The Virtual Event - Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in this event?

This event is free to anyone that is able to take part. Whether you’ve got children that have recently learned to climb the stairs or you’ve had a lifetime of mountain experience, with 6 different challenges available, there’s something for almost everyone.

We’d obviously ask that whatever you choose to do that you do it safely and follow current government guidelines relating to COVID-19.

Why a virtual event?

This year, we haven’t been able to put on any of our physical events like the Children’s Cancer Run and other major fundraising activities such as the Great North Run have also been cancelled. This has meant a significant loss of income for the charity.

By putting on this new virtual event we are aiming to raise new funds to help fund the vital research needed to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer.

Where can I take part?

Because this is a virtual challenge, you can take part anywhere – indoors up your stairs or outdoors on physical hills or steps.

Why not find out where your local hills are and make plans to get outside and challenge yourself?!

Whether you take on one or all of the challenges please take photos along the way and share with us!

When will I receive my medal?

If you have paid for a medal, it will be sent out the week after the challenge is finished. The challenge finishes on 31st October 2020.

Medals are a limited edition, custom design and made from acrylic. They cost £5.00 and can be purchased along with other event merchandise via our Climb Shop

How do I pay my sponsorship?

When you register via our website, you will receive an email link to activate a JustGiving Page. If you choose to use this, the money will come to us automatically at the end of your challenge.

You can also:

Download a sponsorship form

Pay sponsorship in via the website

or send a cheque made payable to North of England Children’s Cancer Research

NECCR,
Floor 6, Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre
Herschel Building
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE1 7RU

Unfortunately at the moment, due to COVID-19, we are not able to accept cash being dropped off or sent in the post.

Do I need to submit my results at the end of the challenge?

No…

If you use the app, we’ll know how far you’ve climbed and you will automatically receive a digital certificate to download at the end of your challenge along with your medal (if you selected to receive one.)

If you log your climbs manually, you’ll still receive a digital certificate by email. You can share your successes with us if you want to, but we trust you, so it’s not compulsory!

Can we do a team challenge? Can I register as a team?

At the moment, there’s no function within the app to do the challenge as part of a team for a cumulative total. However there’s nothing stopping you from challenging your friends, colleagues or school to a bit of healthy competition to see who can get to the top of each milestone first. You could also get together for a socially distanced group climb or relay at your local hill or steps!

We have put together a short guide to show you how you can set up you own team challenge here:

Bear with us… building teams is something we will look to build on for next year 🙂

The App - Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know if the app will work on my phone?

The app is being built to be compatible with most iOS and Android devices, but due to the very short time restraints we’ve had to get this ready, there there may be some devices that it won’t work on. If the app isn’t going to work on your phone, it either won’t show in the app store/marketplace or will show you a message to say it is not compatible.

Can I participate in the event without the app?

YES!

If you are unable to download the app or you don’t have a mobile device, you can still take part in the event. We have put together a handy free manual log which you download to help you monitor your progress… or you can choose your own way to record your climbs!

Download the manual log now

Do I need data or wifi for the app to work?

NO!

The app uses technology (a barometer) already built into your phone for indoor climbs and GPS for outdoor climbs so you don’t need data or wifi for it to work.

If your phone doesn’t have a barometer, or you don’t want to use GPS you can still enter your activity manually via the ‘record a climb’ page to see your progress.

Can i use an existing fitness tracker?

Yes, you can.

If you’re used to tracking your progress in another app like Strava or looking at your health data on your phone to see how many stairs you’ve climbed in a day, you can still use these, but we’d recommend that you still add a manual entry in to The Climb app so that you can specifically see how you’re doing on the challenge you have set yourself… and get to see the views from the top of each milestone you pass along the way… 🙂

What are the current known issues within the app

Current known issues that we are trying to resolve as soon as possible are:

  • Alert on phone if you add a space after the end of your name
    • (please try adding name without space)
  • Taking more time than expected to get through ‘How It Works’ section
    • This should resolve itself over time if you wait but we understand that you just want to get going! We’re looking in to it.
  • ‘Something went wrong’ for android users on indoor climbing.
    • Some phones unfortunately don’t carry the technology for the indoor climbing element. Try doing a manual entry instead if this is the case.

How do i report a problem if it's not working as it should

If the app doesn’t work as it should, please contact the NECCR team via email contactus@neccr.org.uk or facebook messenger.

Does the app measure elevation or steps?

The app measures elevation as it uses a barometer rather than a pedometer (which measures steps.)

There is an option to manually add how many flights of stairs you have climbed from the ‘record a climb’ page

How accurate is the app in terms of measuring height?

Initial tests have shown accuracy to be within around a few metres both indoors and outdoors.

This is the first time we have developed any technology to accompany an event, so if you have feedback (good or bad!), please do let us know contactus@neccr.org.uk

It won’t be perfect, but we really hope you enjoy the experience – and if you feel it’s under reporting your effort, you can top it up with a manual entry 🙂

Does the app measure activity when it's closed?

No, you have to open the app and click record for it to record your activity, so you need to remember to ‘turn it on’ 👍

Please remember to fully close the app once you’re finished your activity.

What happens if the app shuts down unexpectedly during an activity?

If the app restarts then you will be given the opportunity to save your progress in the normal way. There is also an option to add data manually via the ‘record a climb’ page.

Where is the data for the climb stored?

During a climb the app stores your progress locally in a temporary file that updates every few seconds.

No personal data is stored in the cloud, on servers, or shared – it has been built for adults and children alike to use and is GDPR friendly.

If I choose a challenge and achieve it before the end of the month, can I do another one?

YES!

With the exception of the Everest Challenge, whichever challenge you select, you will be given the option to move on to the next one once completed.

You an also select a harder challenge if you change your mind once you get going.

Can we do a team challenge? Can I register as a team?

At the moment, there’s no function within the app to do the challenge as part of a team. However there’s nothing stopping you from challenging your friends to a bit of a competition to see who can get to the top of each height first, or to do an indoor / outdoor relay with one device!
